The Foyer – a 36-bed supported housing project providing accommodation and support for people aged 16-25 – has helped more than 450 people over the last 10 years.
As well as providing a safe environment for vulnerable young people the Foyer – which is owned and managed by The Guinness Partnership - offers support and guidance to help them in their transition from dependence to independence.
All residents have a support plan which helps them to become economically active and looks at their education, health, career and personal development needs.
The anniversary party, which had a Wizard of Oz theme, brought together current and ex-residents, members of the public and agencies such as the Children and Young Peoples Services and the Harvest Gardening Project.
“We are delighted so many people turned up to see what we have to offer here at the Foyer” says Debbie Pickard, Interim Manager of the Foyer in Commercial Road.
“The day was a great success and a chance to reflect on the difference the Foyer has made to people’s lives over the last 10 years.
“We decided on a Wizard of Oz theme as this is our ‘tin’ anniversary and the story fits in with our ethos. We work with people to engage their brain in training and education and help them look after their heart by living a healthy lifestyle and also help them find the confidence and courage to live independent lives.”
CASE STUDY:
“Before I came here I was on the streets with no future. Thanks to the Foyer, I can now follow my dreams at University. Although I put the effort in, it was their kindness and support that inspired it.”
Connor, Foyer Resident
Before moving to Exeter Foyer in October 2009, Connor was homeless and out of education – but now he is looking forward to a bright future and is leaving the Foyer to go to Southampton Solent University.
When Connor arrived he preferred to stay in his room and was lacking motivation. With encouragement and support from staff he began to enjoy being part of a group and has successfully completed a number of courses, including a one year Access to Higher Education and Media course at Exeter College.
Connor has made good use of both the support and resources available to him while staying at the Foyer including access to facilities at the XCentre, a training facility for young people.
Without the help and support of Foyer staff and the facilities, Connor feels that he wouldn’t be on his way to university today.
