Guinness Trust's Home Improvement Agency, Independence at Home, aims to maximise people opportunities to remain in their own homes with greater independence, comfort and security.

This service is available to residents of the Chelmsford Borough and Maldon District.

Who can apply?

You can use our services if:

You live in Chelmsford Borough or Maldon District
AND
You are over 60
AND/OR
You are disabled

Adaptations

Including:

  • Stairlift
  • Graded floor shower
  • Security
  • Energy efficiency

Payment for this work might be covered by grants from your local authority or social services. We can help you to decide what work is needed, to apply for a grant and to find a builder to do the work. We will also supervise the work.

Repairs

A handyperson service is available for minor repairs such as fitting handrails, repairing doors and gates, unblocking waste pipes, and replacing ball valves and tap washers. We can also advise you on security and energy efficiency.

We do not do electrical work, decoration or external jobs above ground floor height.

You pay only for the cost of materials plus £8.00 per hour.

We can also help with major repairs. Grants or loans may be available through the local authority.

Gardening

Our services include:

  • Garden clearance
  • Removal of green waste
  • Tidying gardens
  • Trimming hedges
  • Pruning trees

The cost of smaller jobs is £8.00 per hour. There may also be a small charge for removing any waste that will not fit in your green bin. Larger jobs are priced individually.

Home from Hospital

Coming home after a spell in hospital can be a challenge. We offer free services in partnership with the Dengie Project Trust [http://www.dengieprojecttrust.org.uk/ ], including:

  • Welcome home visit
  • Aids and adaptations
  • Rearranging furniture
  • Home safety checks
  • Shopping
  • Light domestic tasks
  • Pet support
  • Prescription collection
