To end your tenancy all you have to do is tell us in writing one month before you want to go. Your notice period needs to end on a Sunday, or be at least one calendar month if you are on a monthly tenancy. Please include your new address in the letter.
In your letter please include:
- Your new address
- When you expect to move out
- When it would be convenient for someone to come and inspect your home
Ending the tenancy
When we get your letter telling us you are leaving, we will write back to you and tell you the date your tenancy will end. We will:
- Inspect your home and tell you what work we want you to do before you leave
- Tell you exactly how much rent you need to pay to have a clear account when you go
- Arrange what you should do with your keys
- Ask you to show your home to possible new tenants. They will always come with a member of our staff of a letter from us
Tell the water, gas, electricity and phone companies you are leaving so you can sort out your bills with them.
Moving out
When you move out, please take all your belongings with you. If we have to clear the property, we can charge you for this. We are not responsible for any items left behind in the property.
When you leave, please return your keys. (We will change the locks and send you a bill for the cost if you don't.)
Finally, please don't forget to give us your new address in case we need to contact you.
Sadly there is another way your tenancy could end. If you die and have been living alone, we will sort out everything with your family. If you were the tenant and your family is still living with you, your tenancy may not end. This is because some people have the right to take on the tenancy, called succession. This does not mean you can leave your home to someone in a will. Please contact your local office who will explain this in more detail.
