Pottery Quay, Plymouth
Demolition at Pottery
Quay
Devonport Dockyard is located on the west side of Plymouth on
the bank of the river Tamar. Once a thriving centre of Britain's
Naval industry, the area has fallen into decline and is now
undergoing major regeneration. As part of this, the Guinness Trust
is working with other agencies on the Pottery Quay project.
The Trust is working in partnership with Westcountry Housing
Association and have jointly contracted with Midas Homes Ltd. to a
value of approximately £10m to provide a mix of rented and shared
ownership affordable housing, comprising over 100 homes, both flats
and houses. An adjoining site in private ownership has Planning
Permission for retail / commercial space together with 102 private
flats 'for sale'.
The majority of the site to be redeveloped has previously been
occupied by Plymouth City Council flats built in the 1930's and
1960's, and while the Phase 1 area of the site has been cleared by
demolition, tenants remain in occupation of the Phase 2 area until
they can be rehoused in the new development. Once tenants have
moved, Phase 2 will begin.
Consultation with, and input from, the current tenants has been of
great importance in the planning and design of the new Pottery Quay
development. A Community Participation Worker is in place as a
contact point for tenants, and a 'Community Facility' is planned in
the later Phase 2 area.
Innovative architecture and design have been central to the vision
for the Devonport Urban Village regeneration project, and the Trust
has worked together with Plymouth City Council's Urban Design team
to achieve this.
