What type of tenancy do I have?

What are the different types of tenancy?
We rent more than 50,000 homes to over 110,000 tenants. There are lots of different tenancies that we use. The most common are explained here.
- secure: this is a tenancy issued before 15 January 1989. It’s a lifetime tenancy.
- starter: this is a 12-month tenancy, which has fewer rights than secure and assured tenancies. After one year, if it’s working well for you and us, we’ll change it to an assured tenancy. If not, we’ll extend or end this tenancy.
- assured: this is a lifetime tenancy, which is offered after your starter tenancy is finished.
- fixed-term: this tenancy is fixed for six years. This includes a one-year probationary period. You’ll have the same rights and responsibilities as someone with an assured tenancy. We’ll review the tenancy near the end of the six years to see if it still meets your needs. If it does, we’ll offer you a new assured tenancy.
What is a joint tenancy?
If you signed your tenancy with your partner or another member of your household, you have a joint tenancy. As joint tenants you both have the same rights and you’re equally responsible for sticking to your tenancy.
Changing your tenancy agreement
Before we make any changes to your tenancy agreement, we’ll always consult you.
If we want to change an assured tenancy agreement, we’ll ask you to confirm any changes with a signature. We will only change a secure tenancy agreement after giving four weeks’ notice in writing.
