Black Lives Matter

Statement from Catriona Simons, Group Chief Executive of The Guinness Partnership:

We are all deeply saddened by the killing of George Floyd and the tragic events surrounding his death. Sometimes it feels as though there are no words that can do a situation justice. But these are most often exactly the times when we must try and find words, even if they feel inadequate.

The killing of George Floyd is not a unique or isolated event. Violence, and daily injustices, against black people and people of colour are part of a long and shameful history of racism that has pervaded society. That violence and inequality remain features of life in a society that we are part of is a painful and sad reality. We must all work to change this. People should never – not ever – have to live in fear or live with oppression.

Anyone who has suffered persecution or discrimination will say that others cannot truly stand “in their shoes”. But what every single one of us can do – whatever our race or ethnicity – is stand in unity against racism.

I am proud of our values at Guinness, and our commitment to diversity and inclusion. I am also moved by the strength of feeling amongst our residents and colleagues from all backgrounds on issues of race and equality. Now is a time to live our values more than ever, to stand together against racism, and to think harder about what we can do to turn our values into tangible actions for our residents, our colleagues and the wider communities we serve. To create a better society for everyone.

Black Lives Matter.
