“During the summer of 2015 my world felt like it was crashing down around me. After leaving an abusive relationship I found myself pretty much homeless, having had to leave the home my children and I had been living in.
“We went to live in temporary shared accommodation for seven months, but thanks to the work and help of many people and charities, including Shelter, we got back on our feet. In March 2016 we were lucky enough to be rehoused in a Guinness Partnership home. I am eternally grateful to Guinness for giving us the chance to have an amazing home and new start.
“There are so many people on the streets, homeless. It absolutely breaks my heart. No one knows their story or how they came to be there. I wanted to help in any way I could. I wanted to smash my target and help get people off the streets and into a warm and safe house.”
When we heard Rebecca’s story we decided to give her one of our Helping Hand Awards. The award is usually given to our staff, allowing them the opportunity to receive additional funding for the great causes they raise money for. But after hearing Rebecca’s plans, we wanted to help – with our support Rebecca successfully raised over £2,000 for the housing and homelessness charity.
Along with a thank you letter from Shelter, we also received a card from Rebecca. “A big thank you for your support and amazing donation to Shelter as part of my fundraising for the London Marathon. It meant so much to me and so much to Shelter. There are not enough words to express how happy and grateful I am for the support you have shown me.”
What a fantastic inspiration and an amazing cause!
