Work begins on 60 brand
new retirement homes in Totnes

04 January 2016

We have begun construction on a major retirement scheme called Riverside in Totnes.

Brand new retirement homes in TotnesThe £12 million extra care development on Steamer Quay Road will provide 60 new one- or two-bedroom apartments for over-55’s at affordable rent and shared ownership sale.

What is extra care?

Extra care helps residents to live in a home of their own and have access to on-site care and support services as and when they need them. The Riverside scheme will include:

  • a café bistro
  • activity areas
  • and a ‘pamper suite’ where residents can arrange haircuts, manicures and beauty treatments.

Each apartment will have a private balcony with views over the River Dart, or over private courtyard gardens. They’ll also be wheelchair accessible, with wet rooms and fully equipped kitchens.

We expect the homes will be available in autumn 2017.

Care and support

Guinness Care and Support, who deliver care services for us, will provide on-site help 24 hours a day. They will help residents remain as active and independent as possible.

Ryan Hosken, Head of Development Delivery at The Guinness Partnership, said: “We’re extremely pleased to be starting these high-quality, affordable homes for the people of Totnes. We’re especially grateful for the continued support of Devon County Council, South Hams District Council and the Homes and Communities Agency.”

Councillor Stuart Barker, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for adult social care, said: “Extra care housing like this gives people the flexibility and the independence to live in their own home, with the convenience of having the support and the care they need every day.

“They provide an excellent opportunity for people wanting to move to a new apartments from larger rented homes.”
