World champ helps boxers aim high thanks to Guinness Aspire Award

08 July 2022

A Hackney boxing club headed up by a world champion fighter has been given the chance to compete in national competitions thanks to receiving one of our Aspire Awards.

The funding has enabled the Hope of Hackney boxing club to purchase the all-important boxing ring they need to compete against other clubs in England. And by bringing local people together, the club is strengthening the community around it.

A boxing legend

The club’s head coach is boxing legend Maurice Hope, who represented Great Britain in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games and held the WBC Light Middleweight title from 1979-81.

The 70-year-old helped set up the club in the Northwold Youth and Community Centre in December 2021. The space was provided by The Boiler House, the charity which runs the centre and other initiatives in the area, including our new Hackney Family Centre and Baby Bank.

World champion, Maurice, said:

Boxing has done a lot for me, and I wanted to give something back. We just couldn’t do this without the funding from Guinness.

A community space

The club has the equipment it needs for members to do a lot of their training. But a boxing ring means the club can be registered by England Boxing (the national governing body for Olympic-style boxing) and can compete against other clubs.

They had to find a particular kind of boxing ring which could be packed up and put away when not in use, as the community centre is busy throughout the week.

The club runs one day a week but is planning to increase to three. It’s an inspirational place which is encouraging people to aim high when it comes to their sporting ambitions.

People can also connect in many other ways – socially, and also to find support, guidance and activities among the other brilliant services The Boiler House offers.

We’re proud to have been able to fund it through our Aspire Awards which are just one of a range of opportunities and support we provide to invest in, and help create, inclusive communities where we provide homes.
